Freedom Through Surrender: Finding Peace with Restorative Yoga & Reiki

Freedom is often associated with action.

We celebrate freedom by doing more, achieving more, traveling more, and creating more choices. But yoga offers a quieter invitation.

Sometimes freedom isn’t found in doing.

Sometimes it’s found in allowing.

In the Yoga Sutras, one of the Niyamas (personal observances) is Ishvara Pranidhana, often translated as surrender, trust, or letting go of the need to control every outcome.

For many of us, surrender can feel uncomfortable. We like plans. We like certainty. We like feeling productive.

Yet constantly carrying the weight of responsibility, expectations, and the pressure to always be “on” can leave our nervous systems exhausted.

What if true freedom is found not by trying harder, but by trusting enough to soften?

The Freedom of Rest

Modern life celebrates hustle.

Yoga celebrates balance.

Restorative Yoga reminds us that rest is not laziness. It’s a practice of healing.

When we settle into supported postures with bolsters, blankets, and props, our bodies begin to shift out of “fight or flight” and into the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s natural state of rest and repair.

In that space, something remarkable happens.

Our breathing slows.

Our muscles release.

Our minds begin to quiet.

We remember what it feels like to simply be.

That is a kind of freedom many of us rarely experience.

Reiki: Creating Space for Healing

Reiki complements this practice beautifully.

While each person’s experience is unique, Reiki is often described as a gentle energy healing practice that encourages deep relaxation and supports the body’s natural ability to restore balance.

Rather than fixing us, Reiki invites us to receive.

To stop striving.

To stop carrying everything alone.

Whether you experience warmth, calm, emotional release, or simply a peaceful hour of stillness, Reiki creates an opportunity to reconnect with yourself beneath the constant noise of everyday life.

Sometimes the greatest healing happens when we stop trying so hard.

Freedom Isn’t Always Loud

Our culture often portrays freedom as excitement, adventure, and constant movement.

Yoga reminds us that freedom can also be incredibly quiet.

It may look like taking a deep breath.

It may feel like unclenching your jaw.

It may be saying no without guilt.

It may be resting without feeling the need to earn it.

It may be trusting that you don’t have to have everything figured out today.

These moments may seem small, but they create space for something much bigger: a life lived with greater ease, clarity, and presence.

A Different Way to Celebrate Freedom

As our July theme reminds us to reflect on freedom, perhaps we can ask ourselves a different question:

What am I ready to stop carrying?

What would it feel like to trust instead of control?

What might become possible if I simply allowed myself to receive?

Sometimes freedom isn’t another accomplishment.

Sometimes it’s permission to rest.
