Freedom Through Letting Go
When we think about freedom, we often imagine gaining something: more time, more money, more opportunities, more choices.Yoga offers a different perspective.
Sometimes the greatest freedom doesn’t come from acquiring more. It comes from releasing what we’re carrying. One of yoga’s foundational ethical principles is Aparigraha, a Sanskrit word often translated as non-grasping or non-attachment. It invites us to notice where we’re holding on too tightly, to possessions, expectations, old stories, perfectionism, or even the version of ourselves we think we’re supposed to be.
The more tightly we grip, the heavier life can feel.
Many of us know this experience well. We replay conversations we wish had gone differently. We hold onto disappointments. We compare ourselves to where we think we should be. We cling to the idea that happiness will come once everything is finally “just right.”
But what if freedom isn’t found by controlling everything?
What if freedom begins the moment we loosen our grip?
Practicing Letting Go on the Mat
Yoga gives us countless opportunities to explore Aparigraha in a very tangible way.
In Pigeon Pose (Kapotasana), we often discover areas where the body naturally wants to resist. Rather than forcing the pose, we practice softening into it, releasing unnecessary tension with each breath.
Twisting postures offer another reminder. As we gently rotate through the spine, they invite us to release what no longer serves us, creating space for something new.
Even balancing poses become teachers of non-attachment. Whether we wobble, fall, or find steadiness, the invitation remains the same: stay present without becoming attached to the outcome.
Some days balance comes easily.
Other days it doesn’t.
Both are part of the practice.
Freedom Beyond the Studio
Aparigraha doesn’t end when we roll up our mat.
It shows up in everyday moments.
Can we let go of the need to have the last word?
Can we release unrealistic expectations of ourselves?
Can we forgive a mistake instead of carrying it for weeks?
Can we trust that we are enough, even while we’re still growing?
These small acts of letting go often create the greatest sense of freedom.
A Different Kind of Independence
As July invites us to reflect on freedom, yoga reminds us that liberation isn’t only about what happens around us. It’s also about what happens within us.
Every time we release tension instead of resisting it…
Every time we choose presence over perfection…
Every time we let go of something we no longer need…
We become a little lighter.
Perhaps freedom isn’t about holding on more tightly to life.
Perhaps it’s about learning what we’re ready to set down.
Sometimes the most freeing thing we can do is simply take a deep breath, soften our grip, and trust that what truly belongs will remain.
